Mind movie vs vision board: the difference, and which one to use

Beginner9 minute readUpdated October 2026
the short answer

A vision board is a still collage of pictures and words that you glance at during the day. A mind movie is a short video of the life you want, with music and affirmations. You sit down and watch it, usually morning and night. A board keeps your goals in sight. A movie helps you feel them as real. Feeling them as real is what brings them into your life. That is why many people use both.

Two tools, one job

A vision board and a mind movie hold the same wishes. The difference is how you meet them.

A vision board is a collage of pictures and words about the life you want. It can be a corkboard on your wall or a page in your journal. It can also be a board on Pinterest or Canva. You make it once and see it many times a day, usually in passing.

A mind movie is a short video of the same life, usually two to five minutes long. It mixes pictures or clips of your goals with affirmations and music. You sit down and watch it, most often when you wake up and before you sleep.

In the Law of Assumption, both work the same way. What you see every day starts to feel normal and yours. What feels normal and already done shows up in your real life.

Psychologists have a name for part of this, the “mere exposure” effect. People feel at home with things they have seen many times. A board does this quietly, in the background. A movie does it on purpose, with your full attention.

Mind movie vs vision board, side by side

In short, a board is easier to make, and a movie is easier to feel.

Vision board Mind movie
Format Still pictures and words Video with music and words
Effort to make An hour or two An hour or two, plus some editing
Sound None Music, and often a voice reading your affirmations
Movement None Scenes change, so your attention stays
How you use it You glance at it You sit down and watch it
Time each day A few seconds, many times Two to five minutes, once or twice
Repetition Constant, but easy to stop noticing Set times, full attention
Cost Free on Pinterest or Canva, or a little for a board and prints Free to make by hand on your phone
If you find it hard to picture things Helps a little: you see the things, not the moment Helps a lot: the scene plays for you

When a vision board is enough

A vision board is enough when you already find it easy to picture your goals. It works well when you mostly want a reminder.

A board suits you if:

  • You love making things with your hands, and the making itself gets you excited.
  • You want your goals in sight all day, on your wall, your lock screen or your desk.
  • Your goals are mostly things, like the car, the apartment or the trip.
  • You already have a daily practice, like scripting or SATS. Scripting means writing your story as if it already happened. SATS means imagining a scene as you fall asleep. The board reminds you what you are practicing for.

A board has one weakness. After a week or two on the wall, many people stop really seeing it. It becomes part of the room. If your board has gone quiet, that is normal. It is also the moment a movie can help.

When a mind movie helps more

A mind movie helps most when you want to feel the life, not just see a list of it.

A movie suits you if:

  • You find it hard to picture things. Some people cannot form pictures in their mind at all. This is called aphantasia. Many more people only see pictures faintly. A board shows you the objects, but you still have to imagine the moment. A movie plays the moment for you.
  • You want a daily habit. Sitting down for three minutes with headphones in is a habit. Walking past a board is not.
  • Your goal is a feeling or a person. Love is hard to put on a board. A ring and a couple holding hands look like any couple. A movie can show the small moments. A good morning text, dinner together, your friends meeting them.
  • Your board has gone quiet. Turning it into a movie brings the same goals back to life.

Which is better?

For feeling it as real, a mind movie is better. For keeping goals in sight all day, a board is better. Most people get the most from both.

Think of it this way. The board is your list of scenes, and the movie is where you step into them. Keep the board where you see it. Each morning and night, watch the movie made from it. If you only have time for one, choose the movie. Sitting down with your full attention is where the feeling sinks in. And the feeling that sinks in is what comes into your life.

There is one thing neither of them does well on its own. Neither shows you. Most boards and most homemade movies are full of pictures of strangers. Someone else’s hands, someone else’s kitchen, someone else’s partner.

In one well known study, people pictured themselves voting, as if watching themselves from the outside. More of them said later that they had voted. Seeing yourself do something helps you believe you are someone who does it. Whatever you choose, put yourself in it wherever you can.

How to turn your vision board into a mind movie

You can turn any vision board into a mind movie in about an hour. Here is how.

  1. Pick one or two areas. Look at your board and choose the one or two goals that matter most right now. A movie with ten goals is a blur.
  2. Turn each picture into a moment. For each picture, ask yourself one question. “What am I doing in this picture, on an ordinary day, once it is mine?” Write that moment in one sentence. Use the first person and the present tense.
  3. Find or take a photo for each moment. Your own photos are best. Use a photo of you somewhere similar, your own hands, or your own room.
  4. Write one line for each scene. Use a short affirmation that matches the moment.
  5. Put it together on your phone. Use a free editor like CapCut or Canva. Add a calm opening, your scenes with their lines, a song you love and a calm close. Our guide to making a mind movie for free walks through every step.

Worked example: a love corner of a board

Say one corner of your board holds a couple on a beach at sunset, a bunch of roses and a cozy apartment. Here is that corner as a mind movie.

The beach picture becomes:

We walk along the water at sunset, my sandals in their hand, and they stop to kiss me.

The roses become:

I come home and find flowers on the table with a note in their handwriting: “Just because.”

The apartment becomes:

We are on our couch under one blanket, choosing a movie and laughing at the same bad trailer.

Lines for these scenes: “They choose me every day.” “I am so easy to love.” “Our home is full of laughter.”

The same works for any goal. A board picture of a city skyline becomes:

I step out of my new office at lunch and the city is buzzing around me.

And a picture of a stack of savings becomes:

I check my savings and smile. There is more than enough.

Ways to do this

There are four main ways to get a mind movie from your goals. Here they are, from the most hands-on to the least.

  • By hand. Turn your board into scenes with the steps above. Edit them together on your phone. It is free and personal, and it takes an hour or two.
  • Made for you, with you in it. Solulu is an iPhone app. It turns the life you describe and your photos into mind movies with you in the scenes. Each one has a calm kaleidoscope opening, scenes of you living that life, affirmations and music. You can also add photos of your SP, the specific person you want to be with. You can add places, outfits, pets and things you want too. It is the best way to go from a board to a movie, for the four reasons below.
  • A vision board app. Some vision board apps can turn the photos you add into a simple slideshow with music and affirmations. You still choose and arrange every picture.
  • A template or a freelancer. Etsy sellers offer Canva mind movie templates you fill in. Some creators on Fiverr will make one from your photos and goals.
You in the scenes Works if you find it hard to picture things Easy to keep up
Solulu Yes, new scenes of you living it Yes, you watch the scene Yes, no editing, new movies as your goals grow
Vision board on its own Rarely, usually strangers Partly: you see things, not moments Easy, but you stop noticing it
Mind movie by hand Only in photos you already have Partly: stock clips leave gaps to imagine An hour or two each time you remake it
Vision board app slideshow Only in photos you already have Partly: still pictures, not moments You choose and arrange every picture
Template or freelancer Only in photos you send Partly A new template or brief for every change

Solulu is built on the Solulu method. Write one specific scene from the life you want. See yourself in it. Watch it every morning and night, with fresh pictures every few days. Your board names the scenes, and a mind movie with you in it is how you see them.

Why Solulu is the best way to turn your goals into a mind movie

Solulu wins on the three things that matter most. You are in it. It does not depend on your imagination. And it is easy to keep doing.

1. You see yourself living it. A vision board gives you pictures of strangers. A handmade or template movie is usually built from the same stock images. That is because you do not have photos of a life you have not lived yet. Solulu creates new scenes of you living the life you describe. You on the beach, you on your couch with your person, you in your new office. Seeing your own face there makes it feel like a memory, not a wish.

2. It does not depend on your imagination. A board shows you a ring or a house. Then it asks you to imagine the moment around it. That is the hardest part of manifesting, and impossible for people who cannot picture things. With Solulu you do not have to imagine the moment. You watch it.

3. It never goes stale. Most practices repeat the same words, audio or pictures every day. After a few weeks, your mind gets used to them and the feeling fades. The Solulu method makes refreshing part of the practice, and Solulu keeps making new mind movies of you as your story moves on. So what you watch never goes stale.

4. It is easy to keep doing. A board fades into the wall within weeks. A handmade movie means more editing every time you want to change it. With Solulu there is no editing. You describe your life and add your photos, and it keeps making new mind movies as your goals grow. All you do is watch for a few minutes, morning and night.

Keep your board if you love it. Let it be your list of scenes, and let the movie be where you live them.
