Law of Attraction vs Law of Assumption: what is the difference?
The Law of Attraction says your thoughts and feelings send out energy, and you attract whatever matches it. So you raise your feeling, or vibration, to match your wish and let it come to you. The Law of Assumption, taught by Neville Goddard, says that whatever you assume is true about yourself and your life becomes real. So you live as if your wish has already come true, and keep going until the world catches up. Both bring what you want into your real life. They grew from the same root, and most people use ideas from both.
The difference in one line
The Law of Attraction has you match the vibration of your wish. The Law of Assumption has you assume your wish is already done.
In the Law of Attraction, you are like a radio. Your thoughts and feelings send out a signal, and life sends back more of the same. Like attracts like. So you raise your feeling to match your wish, and it comes to you.
In the Law of Assumption, you are the author. Whatever you assume is true about yourself and your life becomes true in your world. So you decide your wish has already come true, and you live from there. You hold steady until the outside world matches.
Both teach the same truth: your inner world shapes your outer world. What you hold inside shows up in your real life. The two laws disagree about how it happens.
Where both ideas come from
The two laws grew from the same root. It was a movement called New Thought.
New Thought began in the United States in the 1800s. One of its early figures was Phineas Quimby, who lived from 1802 to 1866. He taught that the mind plays a big part in health. New Thought writers taught that your thoughts shape your life.
The Law of Attraction came out of that world. In 1897, Ralph Waldo Trine wrote that “like attracts like” in In Tune with the Infinite. In 1906, William Walker Atkinson put the phrase in a book title, Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World. Wallace D. Wattles followed with The Science of Getting Rich in 1910.
In 2004, Esther and Jerry Hicks published Ask and It Is Given. It teaches that your emotions show whether you are in tune with what you want. Then in 2006, the film and book The Secret made the Law of Attraction famous around the world.
The Law of Assumption comes from one teacher, Neville Goddard. He lived from 1905 to 1972. He was born in Barbados and taught in New York and Los Angeles.
Neville wrote short books and gave many lectures. His early books are Your Faith Is Your Fortune (1941) and Feeling Is the Secret (1944). Later came The Power of Awareness (1952) and The Law and the Promise (1961). His main teaching was to “assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.” In plain words, feel as if your wish has already come true.
He called his teaching “the law of assumption” himself, most of all in The Power of Awareness. His readers still use that name. It is the school behind most manifesting on TikTok. For the full picture, read the Law of Assumption explained.
Side by side
Here are the two schools on the questions that matter when you practice.
| Law of Attraction | Law of Assumption | |
|---|---|---|
| What causes results | Your vibration: the energy of your thoughts and feelings attracts its match | Your assumptions: what you accept as true about yourself and your life becomes real |
| What you are told to do | Raise your vibration to match the wish: feel good, ask, then allow | Decide the end, feel it as done, live from it, and keep going |
| What “belief” means | Trusting the universe will deliver | Knowing it is already done, the way you know your own name |
| Who is in charge | You and the universe, working together | You. Your imagination is the cause |
| How it explains a delay | Your vibration is not a match yet, or you are blocking it with doubt | The outside world (the 3D) is catching up with an assumption you have not held steady yet |
| What to do with bad feelings | Gently move to a thought that feels better | Feel them, then go back to the end. Feelings do not decide the result |
| Key books | The Secret, Ask and It Is Given | Feeling Is the Secret, The Power of Awareness |
Where they really disagree
The biggest split is about who does the work. Is it the universe, or your own assumption?
- Attract vs assume. The Law of Attraction pictures you pulling things toward you, like a magnet. The Law of Assumption says nothing needs to be pulled in. The thing you want is a state you step into. Neville said it this way in Feeling Is the Secret: “you always draw that which you are.”
- Mood vs state. Law of Attraction teachers often ask you to keep your vibration high and watch your mood closely. Law of Assumption teachers say a bad day does not undo an assumption. What counts is the state you return to, not every passing feeling.
- Waiting vs persisting. In the Law of Attraction, you ask, then let go and trust the timing. In the Law of Assumption, you persist. That means you keep assuming the end, even when the 3D says otherwise. The 3D is the physical world around you.
- Other people. In the Law of Assumption, other people reflect your assumptions back to you. This is why the school is so popular for manifesting a specific person. The Law of Attraction tends to talk about people “matching your vibration.”
One wish, both ways
The clearest way to see the difference is to manifest the same wish both ways.
Say your wish is about your SP, your specific person. That is the one person you want. You want them to reach out again.
The Law of Attraction way. You focus on how good it feels to be loved. You write a gratitude list. You listen to music that lifts you. You stop needing it to happen by a certain day. When you feel low, you gently look for a thought that feels better: “Love comes easily to me.”
The Law of Assumption way. You decide it is done. Then you write the end scene. That is one moment that could only happen if you were already together:
We are on my couch with takeout and an old movie. They steal a fry from my box and say, “I’m so glad we found our way back.” I lean into their shoulder.
You replay that scene as you fall asleep. Neville called this drowsy state “a state akin to sleep,” or SATS for short. During the day you think from the end. You do not check their stories, because you already have them.
If they post something that hurts, you revise it that night. That means you replay the moment the way you wish it had gone. Then you go back to your scene. You hold the end until the 3D catches up and they reach out.
The same split works for any goal. Take a new job. The Law of Attraction way is to feel successful and well off now. The Law of Assumption way is a scene:
I hang my new work badge on the hook by my door and text my mom: “First week done. I love it here.”
So the Law of Attraction tunes your feeling to match the wish. The Law of Assumption skips the matching. It assumes one specific scene is already true.
The TikTok words, and where they come from
Most manifesting words on TikTok come from the Neville school. A few come from the Law of Attraction.
| Word | What it means | Mostly from |
|---|---|---|
| SP | Specific person: the one person you want | Law of Assumption communities |
| The 3D | The physical world, which shows your old assumptions until it catches up | Law of Assumption communities |
| Persist | Keep assuming the end, whatever the 3D shows | Law of Assumption |
| Self-concept | What you assume about yourself | Law of Assumption |
| Revision | Replaying a bad event the way you wish it had gone | Law of Assumption |
| SATS | The drowsy state before sleep, used to sink a scene in | Law of Assumption |
| Vibration, high vibe | The energy your thoughts and feelings give off | Law of Attraction |
| Alignment | Feeling in tune with what you want | Law of Attraction |
| Signs from the universe | Small events that show your wish is on its way | Both, used in different ways |
Every term is in the manifestation glossary.
What the two schools share
Under the different words, both schools ask for the same three things. So does every other way to manifest.
- A clear picture. You know exactly what you want, and you can see it.
- Belief that it is coming. You are not hoping or begging. The Law of Attraction trusts it is on its way. The Law of Assumption goes further and feels it as done now.
- Coming back to it. You return to it every day, until the new picture feels more normal than the old one. Then it comes into your life.
Where methods differ is in how they get you there. These two laws are two of several families.
- Law of Assumption methods have you assume and feel the wish as already done. SATS, scripting, revision and living in the end belong here.
- Law of Attraction methods have you raise your feeling to match the wish. “Ask, believe, receive” from The Secret is one of them.
- Repetition methods repeat the wish until it sinks in. Affirmations, the 369 method and subliminals work this way.
- Ritual methods set an intention in a small act and let it go. The bay leaf and pillow methods are examples.
- Sign-based practices read and follow signs from the universe, like angel numbers and new moon wishes.
Because they share so much, many people mix the two laws. You can keep a Law of Attraction gratitude habit and a Law of Assumption bedtime scene. The two help each other.
Which one suits you?
Pick the one that feels most natural to you. That is the one you will keep doing.
- The Law of Attraction suits you if you like the idea of the universe as your partner. Good moods, music and gratitude keep you going. You want a gentle, flexible practice.
- The Law of Assumption suits you if you want one clear method. It is a strong fit for a specific person. You like being fully in charge, and you are ready to keep going when the 3D does not match.
- Mix them if you want a good-mood habit during the day and a specific scene at night. Many people end up here.
Quick answers
Here are the questions people ask most about the two laws.
- Is the Law of Assumption the same as manifestation? It is one way of manifesting. Manifesting is how you bring what you want into your real life. The Law of Assumption is Neville Goddard’s teaching on how that works, and the method that comes with it. Other methods, like the Law of Attraction, work in a different way.
- Which one works better? Both work, so the better one is the one you will keep doing. Both ask you to believe in the wish and keep focusing on it. So the better school is the one that fits your days. If you want one clear method, start with the Law of Assumption.
- Does the Law of Assumption work? Yes. What you assume and feel to be true hardens into fact, as Neville Goddard taught. Hold the end as done, and it becomes part of your life. Research also backs its main habits: expecting good outcomes and using the drowsy state before sleep. The details are in does manifestation work?
- Who started each one? The Law of Attraction grew from many New Thought writers. Trine and Atkinson were among the first to name it. The Law of Assumption comes from one teacher, Neville Goddard.
The practices, compared
Both schools use the same five practices in different ways. The Solulu method puts them into one daily habit.
| Visualize | Feel it | Affirm | Act | Let go | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Law of Attraction | Picture the things you want | Raise your vibration with good feelings | “I am a magnet for love” style lines | Act when you feel moved to | Ask, then trust the timing |
| Law of Assumption | One end scene, often in SATS | Feel the wish fulfilled | “I am” statements about yourself | Act from the end, as the one who has it | Persist, and stop checking |
| The Solulu method | See yourself inside one specific scene | Feel it as a memory, not a wish | Present-tense lines inside the scene | Live as the one in the scene | Return morning and night, without checking |
The Solulu method works with either school. Write one specific scene from the life you want. See yourself in it. Then watch it every morning and night, and keep it fresh with new pictures every few days.
Ways to practice either school
You can do all of this by hand, with an app, or with simple tools.
- By hand. Write your end scene in a notebook or your notes app. Write it in first person and present tense. Read it in the morning, and replay it in your mind as you fall asleep. Add a short gratitude list if you lean toward the Law of Attraction.
- With Solulu. Solulu is an iPhone app that turns your scene into a mind movie with you in it. You describe the life you want and add your photos. You can also add photos of your SP, places, outfits or things you want. It makes personalized mind movies. Each one has a calm kaleidoscope opening, scenes of you living that life, affirmations and music. It keeps making new ones as your goals grow. It is the best way to practice either school, for the four reasons below.
- With other tools. A vision board keeps your wish in sight. Affirmations and subliminals give you words to repeat. Scripting puts the end on paper.
Why Solulu is the best way to practice
Whichever law you follow, part of the job is the same. Keep the wish clear and close, and keep coming back to it until it shows up. Solulu does that job better than the other ways on this page, for four reasons.
1. You see yourself living it. Affirmations give you words. Scripting gives you a page. A vision board gives you pictures, usually of strangers. Solulu shows you your own face, already living your scene. You are with your SP, in your apartment, at your new job. In the Law of Assumption, that is the whole point: not “I want this” but “this is mine.” In the Law of Attraction, it lifts your feeling to match the wish.
2. It does not depend on your imagination. SATS and classic visualization ask you to build the scene in your head and hold it there. That is the hardest part of either law. For people who cannot picture things, it is close to impossible. With Solulu you look at the scene instead of building it. So your energy goes into the feeling.
3. It never goes stale. Most practices repeat the same words, audio or pictures every day. After a few weeks, your mind gets used to them and the feeling fades. The Solulu method makes refreshing part of the practice, and Solulu keeps making new mind movies of you as your story moves on. So what you watch never goes stale.
4. It is easy to keep doing. Persisting is the hard part of both schools. Scripting takes ten to twenty minutes a day. Subliminals take twenty minutes or more. After a few weeks, you stop noticing a vision board on the wall. Watching your scene takes a few minutes at two set times, morning and night. So it fits into a busy life.
