How to manifest your ex back: the method, and the questions to ask first

Intermediate10 minute readUpdated October 2026
the short answer

To manifest your ex back, decide what relationship you actually want with them. Then write one short scene from that relationship as if it is already happening. Replay it every day, most of all as you fall asleep. Revise painful moments in your imagination, rebuild your own life, and stop checking their profile for proof. Hold that scene as real, and they come back into your life. Before you start, ask whether you want them or just want the hurt to stop.

The short version

Most people manifest an ex back with the Law of Assumption, the same way they manifest any specific person, or SP. You live in the end. That means you picture the relationship you want with them as if it is already real. You come back to that picture every day, and you stop looking for proof. You hold it until they come back into your real life.

What makes an ex different is the history. You are not imagining someone new. You are imagining someone you already know. Your memories of them pull you back into the breakup every time you think of them.

So this page spends as much time on the questions to ask first as on the method itself.

What the community actually does

Most ex-back manifesting is discussed in SP communities online. They mainly use four tools, and you will see these words everywhere.

  • Scripting. Writing about the relationship as if you are already back together, in a journal or notes app. See scripting manifestation.
  • Revision. Replaying a painful moment the way you wish it had gone, like the breakup or a cold reply. Neville Goddard taught this. Most SP communities follow his Law of Assumption.
  • SATS. The State Akin To Sleep. You replay one short scene in the drowsy minutes as you fall asleep.
  • Detaching. Letting go of the need to see proof, and getting on with your life, while still holding the wish.

Exes do come back. These communities are full of reunions, some after months of no contact. Often it happens right after the person stops trying so hard. The timing is different for everyone, so hold the end and let the 3D catch up.

Why do you want them back?

People want an ex back for four main reasons. Only one of them is a good reason to manifest them.

  1. Love. You truly like who they are, and you liked who you were with them.
  2. Habit. They were part of your daily life, and the gap feels too painful.
  3. Fear. You fear being alone, never finding anyone else, or starting over.
  4. Unfinished business. You want to win or to be chosen. You want to fix how it ended, or to hear them say sorry.

Habit, fear and unfinished business are all real and all painful. But they are about the hurt, not about the person. If you manifest from fear, your scenes tend to be about relief instead of the relationship. A typical one is “they come back and I can finally breathe.”

Love brings different scenes. The two of you laugh at something silly. You share a calm Sunday. You feel a hand on your back in a crowd.

You can want them for more than one reason. The point is to know which one is strongest.

Questions to ask before you start

Take ten minutes and answer these on paper. Be honest. Nobody will see it.

  1. Was I safe with them? Did I feel respected most of the time?
  2. What ended it? Has that thing actually changed, in them or in me?
  3. If they came back tomorrow exactly as they are, would I be happy? Or would I need them to be different?
  4. Do I like who I am when I am with them?
  5. Am I manifesting them, or the version of them from the first three months?
  6. If I imagine my life a year from now without them, but happy, what is in that picture?

If your answers make you more sure, go ahead. If they make you hesitate, that is useful too. Honest answers can change what you choose to manifest. Sometimes it is your ex. Sometimes it is a relationship that feels like the good parts of your ex, without the bad.

The method in six steps

This is the core method, built from the four tools above. The next page in this series turns it into a full Law of Assumption plan.

  1. Write the relationship you want, in one sentence. Not “them back,” but the new relationship. You are not trying to rewind to the old relationship, which ended. You are manifesting a better one. For example: “We are together, we are kind to each other, and we talk things through.”
  2. Write one end scene. Choose a small, ordinary moment that would only happen if you were back together and happy. Write it in first person and present tense, as something you could see and hear. Make it hyper specific.
  3. Revise the breakup. On a quiet night, replay the breakup talk or the last hard message the way you wish it had gone. Then let it go. You only need to revise a moment until it stops hurting.
  4. Replay your scene as you fall asleep. Your mind is most open in the minutes before sleep. Neville Goddard called sleep the door into heaven. What you fall asleep feeling carries into your life. Loop your scene until you drift off. This is what people mean by manifesting your ex back “while you sleep.”
  5. Rebuild your self-concept and your life. Your self-concept is what you believe about yourself. Act like someone who is loved and whole. See your friends, take care of your body, and go after your own goals. Your ex should come back to a fuller version of you, not someone waiting by the phone.
  6. Stop checking. Mute their profile. Stop rereading old chats, and stop asking friends what they are up to. Every check tells you it has not happened yet. Persisting means holding the scene as true, even while nothing outside has changed.

A worked example

Say your ex is Alex. You broke up after months of arguments about never spending time together.

Your one sentence: “Alex and I are back together, and we make real time for each other.”

Your end scene:

Alex is on my couch with their feet in my lap, phone face down on the table. “No plans tomorrow,” they say. “It’s just us.”

Your revision of the breakup night, replayed before sleep:

Alex sits down next to me instead of grabbing their keys. “I don’t want to lose this. Let’s figure it out.”

Your scripting entry, a few lines written as if it is a normal day:

We cooked pasta tonight and Alex burned the garlic again. We laughed so hard. I love how easy it is between us now.

The scene is about the new relationship, the one that fixes what broke. That is the most important difference between manifesting an ex well and replaying the past.

The same shape works for anything you have lost and want back. Here is one for a job you left:

My old manager calls and says, “We have a role for you, and it’s the one you wanted.”

On paper, as a ritual, or as a meditation

People search for many versions of this. They are all the same method in a different form.

  • On paper is scripting. Write your end scene, or a journal entry from the day after you got back together.
  • A ritual is anything that gives the practice a fixed moment. You might light a candle and read your script each night. Or you might write a letter from your future self that you never send.
  • A meditation is SATS. You lie still, breathe slowly, and replay your scene.

Pick the one you will actually keep doing. A simple routine done every night beats a perfect ritual done once.

What to do about contact

You do not need to message your ex to manifest them. Most people who practice do the opposite.

Many go no contact for a while. That means no messages, no likes and no checking. Some do it to heal. Others do it to stop checking the 3D, the physical world, because checking keeps them anxious.

Either way, no contact gives you space to rebuild yourself. It also stops you from acting out of panic.

A few rules keep you safe and calm.

  • If they asked you not to contact them, do not. That is not a manifestation question. It is their choice. Respecting it is part of being someone worth coming back to.
  • If you share friends, school or work, be polite and normal. Do not use those moments to test them or send signals.
  • If they reach out, reply as the version of you who is already happy and whole. Do not be cold or desperate. Just be kind.
  • Do not watch them through friends, second accounts or location apps. It hurts you, and it can frighten them.

What research says about exes and getting back together

Research backs up the method. It shows why two steps matter so much after a breakup. Those steps are rebuilding yourself and stopping the checking.

  • Couples do get back together. Researchers studied couples who break up and get back together again and again. For many of them, a breakup was not an ending but a change in the relationship. Reunions often followed disappointing experiences with other people. The researchers suggest two things may have made getting back together easier. One was staying in touch after the breakup. The other was not being sure where things stood.
  • A breakup shakes your sense of who you are. In a set of studies, people became less clear about who they were after a breakup. That lost clarity, on its own, predicted how much distress they felt. Rebuilding your self-concept in step 5 is aimed at exactly this.
  • Checking their profile keeps the pain fresh. One study looked at 464 people after a breakup. Those who kept checking their ex’s Facebook page felt more distress and missed their ex more. They also grew less as a person.
  • The pull is physical. Researchers scanned the brains of people who had just been rejected but were still in love. The scans showed activity in areas linked to reward and craving. Missing them is not weakness. It is a real pull, and it eases when you stop feeding it.

What if they are with someone else?

This is one of the hardest situations. The answer is the same as for any SP.

Stay focused on your own end scene, not on the new person. You are not wishing anyone harm or trying to break anything up. You are holding your own state. Thinking about the new partner tends to pull you back into fear and comparison. That is the opposite of the calm the practice asks for.

Here is what not to do.

  • Do not contact or check the new partner.
  • Do not try to make your ex jealous.
  • Do not put your life on hold waiting for it to end.

Then ask yourself one gentle question. If this takes a long time, what do I want my life to look like in the meantime? Build that life anyway.

Some people keep manifesting their ex. Others find that what they really want is a love that feels like the good days with their ex. They manifest that instead. Both are valid.

Is there an instant way?

No one can give you a date, and you do not need one. Reunions in the SP communities range from a few months to more than two years. Many came right after the person stopped counting.

So stop watching the clock. Stay in the end, revise what hurts, and let the 3D catch up. What changes first is how you feel. You get calmer and more like yourself, and that is the version of you they come back to.

When to stop

Stop, or pause, if any of these are true.

  • The relationship was unsafe. Do not chase an ex who hurt you, scared you or made you feel unsafe.
  • It is taking over your life. If you are losing sleep, friends or your sense of self, step back. The page Am I obsessed with my SP? has a gentle self-check.
  • You realize you do not want them. That is not failure. It is clarity, and it often means something better is next.
  • They have clearly said no, and you feel the urge to push. Manifesting is about your state, not about pressuring anyone. Pushing hurts you both.

You can stop at any time, and stopping does not undo anything.

More on manifesting a person is on How to manifest a specific person. Every love page is on love, SP and relationships.
