What does "delulu" mean? Meaning, origin and how to use it

Beginner7 minute readUpdated October 2026
the short answer

Delulu is slang for "delusional." It means believing in something that looks unlikely, like your crush liking you back or getting the dream job. You believe it on purpose, before there is any proof. It started as a teasing word among K-pop fans. Now it is a proud word for believing big, and believing big is how many girls start manifesting.

Delulu in one sentence

Delulu means believing in something that looks unlikely, and believing it on purpose.

It is short for delusional, but nobody means it in the serious sense. A friend might say, “I’m being so delulu right now,” with a smile. She means it looks unlikely right now. She is choosing to believe it anyway.

In 2025 the word made it into the Cambridge Dictionary. Cambridge defines it as “believing things that are not real or true, usually because you choose to.”

The last part, because you choose to, is what gives the word its feeling.

How to say it: duh-LOO-loo, with the stress on the middle “loo.”

This page is about the slang word. It is not about the game item, the perfume, the song or the apps with the same name.

Where the word came from

Delulu started in K-pop fan spaces about eight years before it reached everyone else. The earliest known use is a post on the K-pop forum OneHallyu in April 2014. Someone added it to Urban Dictionary that June.

Back then it was a tease. Fans called each other delulu when they were sure they would one day meet, or date, their favorite idol. It was also used for “shippers,” fans who were sure two stars were secretly a couple. Shippers read every look between the two as proof. Often fans said it about themselves, half joking.

The word was so common in those spaces that an Oxford researcher studied it. She studies the language of English-speaking K-pop fans. In 2022 she presented a research paper on the “delulu” fan.

Then, in late 2022, delulu jumped to TikTok. People who had never followed K-pop started using it about their own lives. They used it about their crush, their exams, their job hunt and their glow-up.

Along the way, the word changed its mood. It stopped being a put-down and became something closer to a badge of pride. Being delulu now means having the courage to believe in something big before there is any proof.

By 2025 it was everywhere. In March of that year, Australia’s prime minister, Anthony Albanese, used it in Parliament. He said his opponents were “delulu with no solulu.” In August 2025 the Cambridge Dictionary added the word. News reports about the new entry quoted his line.

Is delulu a good word or a bad word?

Today it is mostly a good word, used with love. It can still hurt, depending on who says it and how.

How it is said What it means Example
About yourself Playful and proud. It looks unlikely, and I believe anyway “Delulu, but I already picked my outfit for when they ask me out.”
To cheer a friend on Go for it, dream big “Be delulu. Apply anyway.”
As a tease between friends You are being a bit much, and I love you “Bestie, he liked one story. You are delulu.”
As a put-down You are out of touch with reality “They’re delulu if they think that plan works.”

So if someone calls you delulu, look at their face and listen to their tone. From a friend, it is almost always a joke or a compliment.

Ten ways to use delulu in a sentence

Here is how people really use it, in love, school, work and friendship.

Love

  1. “They said ‘see you around’ and I’m delulu enough to think that means Saturday.”
  2. “My delulu brain has already named our future dog.”
  3. “Delulu or not, I’m sitting next to them on the bus tomorrow.”

School 4. “I studied for two days and I’m delulu enough to expect an A.” 5. “Applied to my dream university. Delulu is the solulu.”

Work 6. “Delulu move: I put ‘future creative director’ in my bio.” 7. “I’m being delulu and asking for the raise anyway.”

Friends and life 8. “We’re delulu enough to plan a girls’ trip to Japan on a student budget.” 9. “Every January I enter my delulu era, and honestly it works for me.” 10. “Stop calling it delulu. It’s called vision.”

Notice that most of these sentences end with the person doing something. She sits next to them, applies or asks. That is the modern use of the word. The belief comes first, then she acts on it, and the dream starts to become real.

What does delulu mean in love?

In love, being delulu means believing that someone you like likes you back, or will. You believe it before there is much proof.

This is the most common use of the word by far. A delulu girl in love reads a late reply as shyness, not lack of interest. She imagines the first date in detail. She is sure the person she met once at a party is “the one.”

Sometimes this is just fun. It is a private daydream that makes a boring week brighter. Sometimes it gives her the push to say hi, send the message or ask them out. And for girls who manifest, it is where getting their person starts.

And sometimes it stops feeling fun. She checks their profile all day, and her mood rises and falls with every reply. That is the part to watch. The page on healthy and unhealthy delulu, listed under related pages, explains how to tell the difference.

What is a “delulu girl”?

A delulu girl is someone who dreams big and is proud of it. She believes her crush will notice her. She believes she will get into the school, and that this is her year. She is not embarrassed about it.

You will also see “delulu queen”, “delulu era” and “delulu mode.” They all mean the same thing. They describe a stretch of time, or a kind of person, that runs on big hopes. A “delulu era” is a time in your life when you decide to believe in yourself on purpose.

The word is not only for girls. Anyone can be delulu. It is just most popular with young women on TikTok, where the trend grew.

Delulu vs delusional vs optimistic

These three words sound close, but they mean different things.

Word What it means Is it a choice? Tone
Delulu Choosing to believe in something unlikely, to bring a big dream closer Yes, on purpose Playful, self-aware
Optimistic Expecting things to go well in general Partly, it is more of a general mood Positive, everyday
Delusional Holding a belief that is clearly false, no matter what the evidence says No Serious, often harsh

The big difference is choice. A delulu person knows she is dreaming big, and she chooses to. She can laugh about it and still live her normal life. That is why the slang feels light.

“Delusion” is also a medical word, with a different meaning. Calling yourself delulu as a joke has nothing to do with it.

Optimism sits in between. It is a general habit of expecting good things. Delulu is optimism turned up loud, about one specific dream, and said half as a joke.

Why so many people love the word

Delulu took off because it gives people permission. Wanting something big can feel embarrassing. Saying “I’m being delulu” lets you say the dream out loud. You can laugh at yourself a little and keep the dream anyway.

It also fits with something many delulu girls already do, which is manifesting. Manifesting is how you bring what you want into your real life. You get clear on the wish, believe it is coming and keep coming back to it. Delulu is the attitude. Manifesting gives that attitude a daily routine. The difference between the two has its own page: Delulu vs manifestation.
